The Anchorage Adult Autism Group is now forming and plans are in the works to meet in person. The group is open to anyone on the autism spectrum, including those who self-identified, though most of the discussion will probably be more relevant to people on the “high-functioning” end. Family, friends, and professionals supporting individuals with autism are welcome to attend. We aren’t involved in political activism as a group, it’s more of a self-advocacy and support group.
Anyone who fits the description above is welcome to join our new mailing list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/anchorageaut/ or email Ellyn at agriffina@gmail.com for more information.

She’s only 9 years old, but Rachel Pymm plays a critical role at Discovery Elementary School. The fourth-grader has taken an autistic classmate under her wing – teaching him to jump rope and encouraging him when he’s frustrated. “You’re doing a good job!” she told him during a recent lesson on cursive writing.

The producer and director of a film that addresses the challenges and gifts of teens with a high-functioning form of autism sat in her seat at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck last November wondering if anyone would show up. They did.
